Coffee Time

Friday 31st August 2018
Mike - Cavendish Hotel

Here at the Cavendish Hotel we take our reviews very seriously. Back in the day if guests were happy we would only know if they told us or made a repeat booking. Similarly if we could improve something we would have to figure it out for ourselves. But in this digital age everything can be discussed and read by others before they choose to book. Hence the reviews are paramount in this process. We are delighted that guests take the time to write thoughtful reviews and let us know about their stay. It also gives a clear picture of what a stay with us is like for others. So imagine my surprise when a guest marked us a 7 on our coffee.…

World Class: Fireworks & Illuminations!

Monday 13th August 2018
Mike - Cavendish Hotel

Well it's already rushing towards September and we all know what that means to Blackpool: The World Championship Fireworks and the world famous Blackpool Illuminations! The World Fireworks Championship is held over the four Fridays in the month (7th - 28th Sept) at 8.30 (although the build up starts at 7.30.) The best of the best nations in the world of fireworks each stage a display launched from the North Pier just a short walk from us. It's a really popular event and it's free! The Blackpool Illuminations are reckoned to be the world's largest free light show with over six miles of sparkle, glitter and colour on the Promenade between Bispham and Starr Gate. We like to walk them but…

Heritage

Friday 3rd August 2018
Mike - Cavendish Hotel

As you may have surmised Matthew and I took over the Cavendish Hotel in March. It is a wonderful adventure running a hotel and something we had talked about doing for quite a while. But what makes a good hotel? We can't change the building, or the location. To my mind however we are in a great place with the tram stop just a minute away and the lovely North Shore our home. There is something else. We took on the Cavendish from Roy and Christine. They had made this place over thirty years of work. They made its reputation and transformed this Victorian House into something unique. The picture is the oldest one I could find online... we are somewhat…

Out and About

Sunday 29th July 2018
Mike - Cavendish Hotel

Well, I have been having a right old chinwag with some of the Cavendish Hotel's regulars. Lovely people btw, but I am stunned to find that quite a few don't use the amazing Blackpool Transport network. Now I know that you can walk from here to the Tower in under 15 minutes and to the beach in two (remember the North End is high above that pristine sand so one of those minutes is going down to the lower prom after taking in the great views.) However we are placed between Pleasant Street tram stop and Egerton Square bus stop. So how does it work? Well for £5.50 you can buy a 24 hour ticket on the buses or trams that will…

Get Your Skates On!

Saturday 21st July 2018
Mike - Cavendish Hotel

I have tried ice skating with absolutely no success whatsoever! My children are all excellent skaters and can jump and spin and stay upright for the whole time on the ice. Me? Well not so much... As a result I have often taken my children to see ice shows and there's none better, according to the critics than Blackpool Pleasure Beach's own 'Hot Ice' The current show 'Mesmerise' runs until Sept. 8th and with tickets between £5 and £25 I think this is amazing value. Here's some blurb: This years' new production 'Mesmerise' is a spectacular fast-moving live performance which promises to keep you sitting on the edge of your seat. Hot Ice is a dream that is brought to life by…

#notinmylifetime

Mike - Cavendish Hotel

Oh Goodness.... I was a tot in '66 but now... I just wanted to watch a final. Just once... But of course one very special Blackpool alumni did watch "that" final, Loved around here and commemorated at Blackpool's ground with a wonderful statue Jimmy Armfield was a great ambassador for football. Here's the Wiki bit: Armfield won 43 caps for England between 1959 and 1966, and captained his country on fifteen occasions. He made his international debut on 13 May 1959, against Brazil in front of over 120,000 fans at the Maracanã Stadium. He played in the 1962 World Cup in Chile, where he was acclaimed as "the best right-back in the world." Injury ruled him out of playing in '66 but he…

So... why Blackpool?

Wednesday 4th July 2018
Mike - Cavendish Hotel

Welcome to the blog! "So... why Blackpool?" This is a question we have been asked many times... here are a few thoughts :) There is always something to see, enjoy or take part in in Blackpool. If you have never been here you might not know what to expect. So this blog is for you. Firstly Matthew and I would point out that Blackpool has more visitors per year than Benidorm. Over half a million holiday makers come to Blackpool every year all seeking that perfect break. Blackpool Council do a great job keeping the town clean, safe and organised. Yes organised because with that many visitors the way the town works has to work for everyone. I first arrived here in 2012 and…
