Mike - Cavendish Hotel
I was a tot in '66 but now... I just wanted to watch a final. Just once...
But of course one very special Blackpool alumni did watch "that" final, Loved around here and commemorated at Blackpool's ground with a wonderful statue Jimmy Armfield was a great ambassador for football. Here's the Wiki bit:
Armfield won 43 caps for England between 1959 and 1966, and captained his country on fifteen occasions. He made his international debut on 13 May 1959, against Brazil in front of over 120,000 fans at the Maracanã Stadium. He played in the 1962 World Cup in Chile, where he was acclaimed as "the best right-back in the world."
Injury ruled him out of playing in '66 but he still was in the squad. Back then only the players that played in the final were given were given medals but in 2009 the FA persuaded FIFA to award medals to squads rather than just the 11 players in the final and in due course Jimmy was presented with a World Cup Winner's medal by the then PM Gordon Brown.
So might be worth paying homage. And I'll tell you what if you book a two night stay with us for Blackpool FC, Fleetwood Town or AFC Fylde games I will cook you breakfast for free on matchday - home or away supporters... value £4 per supporter (2018/19 season). Just show your ticket and quote "Footie" when you book on 01253 624 575 Or 07783 707 419. Blackpool and the Fylde coast has a wonderful football heritage and at the Cavendish we want to see that continue... and who knows 2022? Oh please !!!
